If you have a fear of the deep, dark ocean or basically any eep body of water then you're probably thalassophobic. If you gag or shutter any time you see a picture that's under the sea then we can almost guarantee this to be true. But if you aren't sure, then the only way to know is to check out some photos for yourself. Many of us here are thalassophobic, so it wasn't easy to gather up these photos and as we write them for you today, we just might also have a lot of trouble. Want to know if you're thalassophobic like us? Check out these pictures below and see how you feel.
A Deep Seated Warning
Going underwater is bad enough, but doing it willingly and choosing to dive really deep is something we just cannot understand. You have no idea what you're going to see down there, and it's so dark that it might as well be haunted. What makes it worse is when you go deep under the surface and you find yourself in a deep, dark cave that has already been explored and slapped with a warning complete with a skull.
Why would you ever want to go back down there ever again? It seems like they must have experienced the dangers themselves. If it's bad enough that you might die, you should consider leaving for good.
This Giant Hole In The Sea Floor
Just when you think you've gone as deep as you can, you stumble upon this huge abyss. It makes sense that the seafloor can always go deeper, as the center of the earth is much, much farther below the surface than the bottom of the ocean, but what makes this so scary is that there never seems to be an end to just how deep the ocean goes.
If we happened upon this gaping hole and stared straight into what could only be a gateway to the underworld, we think we would die immediately. Forget diving down deeper...
When You Look Straight Down
You know when you're above the surface and you look straight down and there just seems to be a black hole that all the light just sinks into? That and the fact that you can't see anything at all seems to be the scariest part of being in the water. It gets even worse when you actually go below the surface because your goggles don't actually seem to help the issue.
Sure, you can see under the water, but there's still the issue of the field of view. It's like being out in a snowstorm and we don't like the idea of all the things that can be lurking in the murky waters.
When You Watch Other Things Go Down
Even worse than looking straight down and being unable to see anything is when you watch other things going down deeper into the water. Take this picture of a rope going deeper into the ocean, for example: the deeper it goes, the harder it is to see. The water sure looked murky before, but after this, we think it's gotta be impossible to see anything under there.
How in the world, then, do divers know where they're going? Why would anyone willingly put themselves somewhere where there is no visibility, land, or oxygen? You just become a sitting duck for all those predators.
Deep Dark Ocean
We will repeat: why would anyone willingly put themselves somewhere where there is no visibility, land, or oxygen? Sure, this picture is beautiful, but does no one see the glaring abyss staring at her from below? This has got to be one of the most uncomfortable pictures yet. It seems like she's going to get swallowed up with no hope of ever coming back.
To this, we just have to say nope. We will never, ever go anywhere that looks anything like this. The picture is good enough... with the hold bottomless pit thing cropped out, that is.
The Empty Ocean
Speaking of deep, bottomless pits, take a look at this next picture. As if the others weren't bad enough, being practically stranded in the middle of the ocean is not something we ever look forward to. Sure, he's got his boat crew over there, but does that really make it feel any better? One thing's for sure: the emptiness of the ocean around him does not make it feel any safer.
In fact, we think this makes it feel exactly the opposite. Imagine it being quiet. Too quiet. That's what we feel looking at this picture. There has to be a hungry shark nearby.
This School Of Sharks
Did we say shark? We definitely meant sharks, plural. This is what we imagine the rest of that dive looking like. They go about their day diving and doing all the fun things you do as a diver when suddenly you look up to see this spectacular, yet horrifying view. Who would be happy seeing an enormous school of hammerhead sharks overhead? We certainly would not, that's for sure.
And if you're the sadistic person who actually would enjoy this, that's great, you're in the wrong place. We're here peeing our pants and you're getting ready to enjoy these kinds of sights? Goodbye.
Up Close And Personal
Now imagine seeing that right up close. This is what you get. A large, scary creature lurking in the murky water with nothing more than a pane of glass separating you from your death. Yes, we know that sharks aren't as aggressive and hungry for people as the media makes it seem, but we can't help feeling our personal space has been invaded by this one.
Whoever you are in whatever building that is that's allowing you to see the sharks like this, we beg you to stop posting pictures of it around the internet.
That Which Lurk Below
Sharks are not the only horrible monster prowling the deep. There are also larger, more tentacly monsters out there. We're talking about squids--giant ones at that. The only thing worse than meeting a shark is this thing. Their intelligent, huge, and who knows what they can do to a person. So when we saw this photo we couldn't do anything but gawk the same way the people on the boat are.
Honestly, if we saw this while we were out at sea (which we wouldn't be) we would immediately proceed to the living quarters and assume the fetal position to cry.
Nowhere Is Safe
We really didn't think anything could ruin the sweet safety that is the shore. But when you see this picture, you'll realize that nowhere is safe. Apparently, there is a thick forest of death awaiting everyone only dozens of feet from the sand. Although it may seem like there's nothing to fear, when you see this picture of a simple wave you might just rethink you're next outing to the beach.
Just take a look at that. The waves normally look so calm, but after seeing this we think they're just another of the things looking to drag us to our demise.
Shark In The Pool
Sure, this one isn't exactly realistic, but you can't say you've never had this fear before. The completely irrational fear that there is a shark lurking in the pol you're currently swimming in. It took us a long time to get it in our head that this was impossible and even longer to get over the idea of a shark ever being in the pool for whatever reason.
Still, we still frequently have nightmares about this sort of thing. Like, what if? We can guarantee that we would never set foot in so much as a bathtub ever again.
The Deep
As long as we're on the subject of unrealistic things, let's talk about what we feel like whenever we look down into the water that we're in. Granted, you'll never see us in water this deep and has no visibility, but for argument's sake, we feel like there's something ungodly lurking down there somewhere. This picture pretty much sums up our exact feeling on this to a T.
We just feel like somethings watching us somewhere out there. We honestly wouldn't be surprised if we someday found a giant eyeball peering up at us from below.
This Guy On A Boat
This one doesn't scare us nearly as much as the others, but when you start to compare the size of the ship to the guy sitting on the rotor, things just start coming into perspective. We are but a measly speck in the vastness that is the ocean. We can already tell that this is a really good example for what we might see living under the sea.
If this were a whale, we'd have no chance. Sure they seem al friendly and unwilling to eat people, but what about those tales about Jonah? They must be a part of a bigger truth.
A Breaching Shark
Okay, imagine: it's the middle of the night and you're out on your boat enjoying the nice ocean breeze. Then, suddenly, a great white shark suddenly breaches the surface of the water and takes a chomp out of your face. That's what we think this person was thinking was about to happen when they took this picture. This is some seriously wild stuff going on right here.
This is one of the reasons we don't go on boats. The more we go on the more likely this is to happen to us. Think about those statistics.
The Eyes Of The Beast
Oh, so you thought that sharks, whales, and giant squids (oh my) were the only things you had to worry about? Think again. You may think that seals are all cute and cuddly, but they are an aggressive bunch. Not only do you not want to mess with one on land, but you sure as heck don't want to meet up with one in the ocean. Sucks for this unlucky fellow.
Just look at that stare. We wouldn't want to be within a ten-foot radius of this thing. It looks ready to bite someone's head off and it's not going to be ours.
Giant Fish
Not only that, but take a look at this fish? What even is that thing??? It's freakin' huge! If you thought the mammals are bad (and the giant scary fish) then wait until you see this one. If it were scaled down quite a bit, it would probably look like a normal fish. This, however, is another thing altogether. We thought fish were kinda cute, but this changes everything.
This has got to be one of the worst things we've seen yet. All of the big things we're afraid to see live out in the ocean, but this thing could easily be lurking in our rivers.
Some Good Camouflage
Speaking of rivers, you know what's scary? Looking at a picture of a nice little river and realizing that there is a deadly predator waiting for you down there. That's right. If you look closely enough, you'll see exactly what we mean. There's a master of disguise down there, and we can tell that it's a big, angry crocodile just waiting for some sorry sap to waltz into its turf.
How this person had the patience and courage to whip out their camera and take a picture, we'll never know. All we can say is that we would have been the first one's out of there.
The Liberty Bell 7
This one gives us nightmares. The kind of nightmares where you find yourself trapped inside of something and can't get out of it. You thought you were thalassophobic? Try mixing that with a glass of claustrophobia as well. This is the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft that has been sitting on the ocean since the 60s. Thankfully, the astronaut who almost drowned with it got out, but it took exactly 38 years to recover the vessel.
Now think about this: that thing was farther down in the ocean than the Titanic at 16,000 feet below the surface. People actually WENT DOWN THERE to help recover it.
A Baby In The Water
Why would you put a literal baby in a literal death trap??? This picture shows the deep dark lake getting ready to swallow the kid up. Clearly, the parents weren't too scared about what would happen to their child if it tried to get out. Can they not see the bottomless pit that is whatever body of water they're in? Obviously, these people are not thalasophobic.
We will continue to pray for this child every day that they never find themselves in this situation ever again. We just can't with leaving a child to fend for themself in this thing.
Sharks Are Horrifying
This gives us nightmares for a whole list of reasons. First of all, this is exactly what we think is waiting for us at the bottom of any natural body of water. Secondly, this kind of looks like what would happen if the world succumbed to an apocalyptic flood. It's probably got something to do with he fact that this is just a statue within Lake Neuchâtel, but still.
Actually, while we're on the subject, WHY THE HECK IS THAT THING DOWN THERE? This has to be the work of someone's sick joke. As if we weren't opposed to diving enough, this is the cherry on the cake.
Squid Or Octopus?
Ugh, here we are again with the giant squids. Or is that an octopus? You know what? It's all the same to us. At the end of the day, this is scary. Imagine just trying to mind you're own business, doing whatever it is you're doing out there when suddenly this thing grabs a hold of your equipment. Worse things in the ocean have never been seen. At least, not yet...by us that is.
Just a big nope nopety nope from us. We can't stress it enough how much we will never go out into the ocean like this for any reason.
Eerie Lake
Oh my god, why? This is so horrifyingly creepy for so many reasons. Why would anyone dive into this unknown land? The contrast between the densely rooted plants and the empty forest is nauseating. You just go from this vast forest (pun intended) of knowledge to a suddenly unknown and foreign universe of questions. It's a beautiful picture, to be sure, but it is not something we will continue to stare at.
Also, on a side note, how do the plants stay up like that? Are those maybe not the roots and they're growing down from the top? The physics here just doesn't seem to make any sense.
Jaws
Somehow, sharks seem scarier in black and white. Why do you think that is? Perhaps it' because when we try to think of the people who had to take the picture, we remember that they probably had less access to things to help them in case they needed to be rescued. Well, that and the fact that it's just scary in general. It is a shark after all.
The ocean also just seems much deeper and darker without color. We hope that the shark wasn't hungry for the person who is going in for the picture here.
Just Why
What even is this? Things like dinosaurs don't usually freak us out, but seeing this after a whole bunch of photos of the deep dark water just makes us queasy. This actually looks like it could be the Loch Ness monster, but whatever it is we don't want to know. In fact, if anyone could tell us where this is so we can avoid it, that would be much appreciated.
At least it's close to the surface of the water. If it were any deeper, we think there would be some pretty sick people over here.
Scary
Ugh, can we please stop with these boat pictures? This neither seems safe nor fun. A thing this big in the ocean is something we want to avoid at all costs, let alone that thing being a rotor bigger than us ready t slice us apart. Is this even a workinf ship? Maybe it's something they found when they went diving deep, an idea that sickens us.
If it's sunken all the way deep down, we're sure it's haunted which is just another reason to avoid these things if you can.
Okay, this one isn't exactly inducing the fear of deep water, but if these are the things hiding down there then we have even more cemented our desire to stay far away. Did you even know there were snakes in the water?? Like...we've heard of snakes like this, but this is something else. This is a literal snake in a literal river just snatching up the fish like it's no one's business.
Hey, at least it got a good catch. We hear catfish are really good. Maybe the snake is going to make some sushi out of this.
According to the poster, this is "Fin Whale vertebrae underneath the freezing water near Kongsfjorden in Norway". The fact that there are things like this in shallow water makes us fear traveling. An actual fin whale spine is not something we want to encounter on our travels or anywhere for that matter. And what happened to it? We hope something bigger didn't take it down.
Honestly, we're asking too many questions here. It's best that we just move on and continue with these horrifying images. If we can even make it much farther.
Whale-Come
Jeez, we just had to talk about whales. We don't even know what this is but this has got to be one of the most terrifying images we have seen so far. The fact that there can be something that big alive in our world somewhere is the most disconcerting thought we've had all day. Not to mention the fact that the people next to it look like ants relatively.
We don't even know what to say. This is something that we just want to erase from our minds forever and stop thinking about. Thank you, and goodbye.
Shark Tales
How many swarms of sharks are there out there? We hope you don't have a fear of sharks on top of that thalassophobia because that would just make for one terrible combination. The number of times we saw this scrolling through images (which was one of the hardest things we've had to do, by the way) just warranted another one of these pictures on here.
Well, enjoy. We're going to leave this here with you and move on to the next few pictures that we know we'll regret checking out.
King of the World
And here's the first of our worries. If you think you recognize this corridor, you probably do. This is a still from "Titanic" after the ship starts to sink. The darkness of the water that has crept into the ship is so scary that we nearly couldn't put this on the list. We just can't stop thinking about what would happen if this were us.
Nobody should have to think about that. There were so many people who literally lived this nightmare more who died and we hope they have finally found peace.
Too Cool for School
Well, we sure deserved this one. It was already scary enough to see the multitude of ships that were underwater, ut to see an airplane under the water is even worse. At least a sinking ship you can escape, but an airplane that crashes into the ocean seems like almost certain death. In fact, the part where you fly over the ocean is the reason we refuse to sit next to the window.
We know that flights are supposed to be safer than driving statistically and that they give you cards that kind of prove their readiness for a water landing, but that just doesn't help at all.
Bottom of the Barell
And this is where it starts to go downhill. First of all, you never go near water. Second of all, you should never go near water that is so deep that you can't see the bottom. Third, if you can't follow these rules, try not to go anywhere near water that looks like a LITTERAL BOTTOMLESS PIT. You could slip in at any moment and never be seen again.
We can't even come close to imagining why anyone would dip their feet in here. Not only that, but the rock looks mighty slippery and that's not a good sign.
Anything for The Gram
Okay, clearly someone doesn't know about the guidelines for avoiding deep water. It looks like this girl just slid herself into that deep dark pit that the last guy was sitting at. For what reason, we have no idea. It doesn't even look like she has anything to help her breathe! That just gives us even more reason to question this woman's decision to go down there.
Something tells us these aren't about to get any better, and that's probably because we're the ones choosing what we see. Well, here's to hoping.
Just Chillin'
Yep, there it is. An even worse view of what we just saw. There was no way we could avoid it, but this is what you see on the other side of that pit from a different perspective. What makes this all worse is the sand that's falling deeper and deeper into the pit. We feel as though that's our souls just draining down along with it.
And on that note, it's time to stop looking at these. Honestly, if we look at it anymore we really will sink down to the bottom of that pit, and no one wants, that, right?
