Not everyone at the Olympics competes alone. In fact, there are plenty of people who either go or even compete with their partners. After all, there are tens of thousands of competitors every year at the Olympics, so there were bound to be some couples here and there. Also, some couples get together after they finish one Olympics and make it into the next one together. We've gathered a collection of the couples who were at the last three games, starting with Tokyo, then Pyeongchang, and finally Rio. Keep reading to find out what couples have made it big together.
Lee Kiefer And Gerek Meinhardt
It's always nice to see a couple competing together in the same sport. They got married in 2019. These two are both representatives of the USA fencing team, women's and men's respectively.
Back in 2016 Gerek won a bronze medal in Rio's Olympic games. He also happens to be the youngest US Olympic fencer of all time. As for Lee, she won gold in Tokyo. They also both have many other individual awards for their work.
Georgia Simmerling And Stephanie Labbe
These two are a Canadian power couple. While they both represent the same country, Georgia is on the women's cycling team and Stephanie is a part of the women's soccer team.
They may not play for the same team, but they are individually very good at what they do. They have each won an Olympic bronze medal in the past. We hope they continue to outshine the competition.
Atanu Das And Deepika Kumari
Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari hail from India and are partly representing India's archery team (don't forget their awesome teammates!). They also happened to get married shortly before the Tokyo Olympics.
Although they have yet to win any Olympic medals, we're sure they have the skills as together they have won gold in many other international competitions. Not to mention all the other medals they've won.
Natalie Powell And Sanne van Dijke
Another LGBTQ+ couple, these two are a strong Judo pair. Although they represent separate countries, these two would undoubtedly make an awesome team. Natalie comes from Great Britain while Sanne comes from The Netherlands.
Together, they have won many medals from a number of different national and international championships. What's more is that Sanne managed to score herself the Olympic bronze at the Tokyo games!
Edward Gal And Hans Peter Minderhoud
The only male LGBTQ+ couple to be competing at the Tokyo Olympics, these two together are a strong force for The Netherlands men's equestrian team. Together, they will be competing in dressage.
They have both managed to snag a couple of medals from different Olympic games for team dressage. If they keep it up, they will probably be able to snag quite a few more.
Sarah Jones And Leah Wilkinson
These two have been openly engaged for almost eight years. Together, they make up a part of Whales' hockey team. It's a pretty special thing to be able to compete with your partner by your side.
Leah specifically has made 158 caps, breaking the record for how many times a person has appeared representing the Wales hockey team. Although they have yet to win any medals, we're hoping to see what they can do at this ear's games.
Megan Rapinoe And Sue Bird
This power couple has been absolutely iconic. With Megan representing the USA women's soccer team and Sue the USA women's basketball team, other countries better watch out. They met at the 2016 Rio Olympics and have since gotten engaged.
Amazingly, out of all the medals that Sue has won, only one of them has ever not been gold. Together, the two of them have also helped their teams bring home Olympic gold medals, together totaling five.
Tara Davis And Hunter Woodhall
Tara Davis represents part of the USA's women's track and field team and Hunter Woodhall is a part of the USA's Paralympic men's track and field team. Although they won't be competing together, they can definitely turn it out on the track.
With their many achievements pushing them forward, the two of them are hoping to bring in gold at the Tokyo Olympics. We are also excited for them and are ready to see what they can do.
Laura Kenny and Jason Kenny
Laura and Jason have been married since September 2016 and have a son together named Albie. These two are absolute monsters on the Great Britain cycling team, and it's hard to believe that anyone could outpace them.
These two have been called "The Golden Couple" and it's easy to see why. Before the Tokyo Olympics, they had a combined total of 10 gold medals together! That's actually crazy.
Celia Quansah And Megan Jones
This couple have been dating since 2019. They are both a part of Great Britain's women's rugby and are yet another couple who happen to be competing on the same team together. They weren't originally so open about their relationship, however.
Celia told BBC, "We never spoke out about [our relationship] initially, but when we did the response was incredible. Everyone was like this is amazing, you're helping so many people by doing this. We didn't even think about it before. If we can help one person feel like they can be themselves, it just makes you want to do it more."
Sandi Morris And Tyrone Smith
Sandi Morris and Tyrone Smith got married back in 2019. Sandi is a part of the USA track and field team and is a well-renowned pole vaulter. Tyrone, on the other hand, is a part of Bermuda's men's long jump team.
Although Tyrone has not yet received an Olympic medal, Sandi managed to nab herself the silver in Rio back in 2016. We haven't given up on them yet, and can't wait to see one of them grab that gold.
Charlotte Caslick And Lewis Holland
These two are both representatives of Australia's rugby team. They are, however, not on the same team, as they are split between genders. They have been dating for a few years and were planning to get married soon, but postponed due to Covid and the Olympics.
They are, however, obviously very excited to be playing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Charlotte had won gold back in Rio in 2016, and they are hoping to lead their teams into victory again.
Amanda Chidester And Anissa Urtez
This recently engaged couple have both been competing in the Olympics for Women's softball. However, they will be competing against each other as Amanda is a part of the USA team and Anissa is a part of the Mexican team.
While their love for softball might end up pitting them against each other, they're stronger because of it. And hey, it gives them each separate chances to bring home medals since they're on opposing teams. Amanda's team managed to get Silver at this year's games.
Jonelle Price And Tim Price
These two are yet another couple competing for the same team, though again for separate gendered teams. Tim and Jonelle Price will both be representing New Zealand's equestrian team.
Although Tim just barely missed the bronze at Rio's 2016 team eventing, Jonelle did manage to bring home a bronze four years earlier in London. They're hoping for a chance to make up for the lost opportunity.
Victoria Moiseeva And Oliver Dupont
This couple is the first of ours from Pyeongchang's 2018 Winter Olympics. They had both competed for each of their respective country's curling teams, with Victoria hailing from Russia and Oliver from Denmark.
The Olympic Games in Pyeongchang was the couple's debut after both managing to pass the qualifications. Although they didn't get any medals that year, we're hoping to see them make a comeback at the next Winter Games.
Rianne De Vries and Daan Breeuwsma
Rianne De Vries and Daan Breeuwsma were competitors for The Netherland's speed skating team. Rianne specifically had made her Olympic debut at the Pyeongchang games while Daan had previously competed in Sochi.
These partners went to the games together, but despite being selected for the competition in two separate Olympics, Rianne did not end up competing in them. We hope to see this pair try again in the near future.
Krystyna Guzik and Grzegorz Guzik
Krystyna and Grzegorz Guzik are a Polish married couple who competed at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. They competed in the biathlon, which, in our opinion, is one of the coolest Winter Olympics sports.
Krystyna has actually been at every Winter Olympics since 2006, making her a veteran in her field. Grzegorz only made his debut in 2014, not long before he and Krystyna got married
Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexander Krushelnitskiy
Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexander Krushelnitskiy had competed in the new 2018 winter event of mixed doubles curling. They were engaged in 2014 and got married a year later.
Together they have both won several championship medals for curling. However, after tested positive for a banned drug at the 2018 Olympics, the couple had their bronze medal rescinded. We hope that they try again
Anna Cappellini and Ondrej Hotarek
These two are a pair of married figure skaters who come from Italy. They do happen to skate with different partners, however, and that's because Anna is an ice dancer while Ondrej is a pairs skater.
Despite having different disciplines and partners, the two are just as strong together as ever. Anna specifically has many medals behind her and we're hoping to see these two bring home some Olympic medals at the next winter games.
Tatsiana Mikhailava and Vitali Mikhailava
Tatsiana and Vitali Mikhailava are married speed skaters hailing from Belarus. What's special about them is that they both made their Olympic debuts in Pyeongchang together for the same sport.
Tatsiana was influenced to take up speed skating by her husband before they both eventually tried out for the Olympics. The fact that they both tried out, got in, and competed together must truly be something special.
Elana Meyers Taylor And Nic Taylor
Elana and Nic Taylor were another married couple competing for the same team back in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. While Elana competed in the USA bobsled team, Nic was an alternative for them.
Because Nic has only been named a replacement bobsledder in his Olympic career, he has yet to be given an opportunity to try out for a medal. Elana, on the other hand, has two silvers and a bromze.
Denny Morrison and Josie Morrison
Another speedskating couple, Denny and Josie married prior to competing together for the Canadian team. Though they weren't the only speedskating couple, they sure wowed the crowd.
While Josie has yet to actually pull in a medal, we're sure she'll get her opportunity soon enough. Denny has a medal of every color and has two silvers in general. We can't wait to see what they bring out next.
Torin Yater-Wallace And Sarah Hendrickson
These young skiers found themselves together after the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games. Though they nearly lost their chance to compete in 2018, they found strength in each other and helped their recoveries.
Although they were able to get themselves back up and out there, they weren't able to achieve victory at the Olympics. They do, however, have some other medals to keep themselves encouraged before their next attempt.
Christian Poser and Jamie Greubel Poser
This couple has been married since 2014. They met each other at a bobsled competition back in 2011. While Jamie comes from the USA, Christian hails from Germany.
They both have several medals backing up their skills, but only Jamie has managed to get an Olympic medal thus far. She won the bronze back in 2014 at Sochi's two-woman bobsled competition.
Jamie Anderson And Tyler Nicholson
These two met in 2015 and have been dating since. They represented North America at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, but Jamie was on team USA and Tyler was on the Canadian team.
Jamie herself actually won two gold medals. Her first was the first gold medal to be given at the Olympics for slopestyle. Although Tyer hasn't won any yet, we're sure he'll do Canada proud soon.
Tommy Zaferes And Katie Zaferes
These two are perhaps the most prominent couple in the professional triathlon world. Tommy fittingly proposed to her during a run in California when they had stopped to admire the ocean view before them.
Although they competed together in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, they weren't able to gather any medals. However, Katie went on to win a bronze in women's triathlon individuals and a silver in team.
Sam Willoughby And Alise Post
Before coming to the Rio Olympics, these two got engaged. They had come to be known as the fastest couple in BMX racing. During the games, Alise managed to win silver in BMX racing.
Unfortunately, not long after the Rio Olympics, Sam suffered an injury that left him paralyzed. He went on to marry Alise in 2019 and also became her coach. Alise went back to Tokyo for the Olympics, but a couple of crashes put her out of the running. We wish them well for any future attempts!
Helen Richardson-Walsh and Kate Richardson-Walsh
Helen and Kate happened to be the first openly gay couple to compete together in the Olympics. They both play for Great Britain's hockey team. They began dating during the Beijing Olympic games and got married in 2013.
Together, they helped their team win the bronze medal for hockey in the London Olympics, and they went on to win gold in the Rio Olympics. This power couple just can't be beat!
Brianne Theisen-Eaton And Ashton Eaton
These two met while in college at The University of Oregon and got married in 2013. They both competed in track and field, but Brianne played for Canada while Ashton played for the USA.
Together, they hold a few Olympic medals. Brianne won bronze in the Rio games and Ashton won gold medals at both the London games and the Rio games.
Chris Adcock and Gabby Adcock
These two are the ultimate couple when it comes to badminton. They played together in badminton mixed doubles at the Rio Olympic games. They are also known as a golden couple of badminton mixed doubles in general.
Despite not having won any Olympic medals, they have plenty of awards proving that they have quite the talent. They announced in 2021, however, that they would be retiring from badminton.
Georgie Twigg and Iain Lewers
This couple played together at the Rio Olympic games in 2016. They both played for Great Britain's hockey team in women's and men's respectively. They got engaged back in 2019.
Unfortunately, Iain's team didn't receive any medals at the games, but Georgie's team was able to take home the gold that year. Her team also won bronze back at the 2012 London games.
Alyce Wood and Jordan Wood
This couple both competed for the Australian team for kayaking at the Rio games. They got married in 2019. Jordan's mother also happens to be Alyce's coach, which must have made for n interesting family dynamic.
They may not have been able to make any medals at the Rio games, but they both have a gold medal from the 2017 Racice world championships. We hope they'll make a breakthrough in their Olympic carreer.
Katelin Guregian and Nareg Guregian
These two competed for the USA Olympic team in rowing. They met at Princeton in 2013, got engaged in 2015, and got married the following year. Outside of the Olympics, Katelin is a five-time rowing world champion.
While Nareg, unfortunately, didn't hit the mark back in 2016, Katelin was able to bring home a gold medal. They would not go on to compete in this year's Olympics held in Tokyo.
Carmen Marton and Safwan Khalil
This powerful couple competed in the 2016 Rio Olympic games for the Australian taekwondo team. They had wed under Muslim law before the 2012 London games and were set to marry according to Australian law after the Rio Olympics.
They have been together since they were just teenagers. Although neither of them got to take home any medals from the games, they had previously won multiple championships.
Nicola Zagame and Johnno Cotterill
Our final couple both played water polo for the Australian team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. They had begun dating at the London game four years prior and got engaged to each other in 2017.
Johnno wasn't able to score a medal at the Olympic games, but Nicola was able to bring home a bronze that year. Interestingly, she was also a contestant on the Australian Survivor television series.
