Kids' television and movies are entertaining for the whole family, and not just because they are so good. The people who make the programs understand that there needs to be a little something extra for the parents that have to sit down and watch it with them, otherwise it might be a little too boring and they won't be able to get them to go with their kids. We've gathered a bunch of moments from TV and movies that kids were sure to miss, but any adult wouldn't. Continue reading for some of the best adult jokes in programs made for kids.
Shrek: Snow White's Virtues
When Farquaad first gets his hands on the magic mirror, he asks it to reveal the best women in the land for him to choose from. When it came time for bachelorette number two, the magic mirror had quite something to say about her.
He was referring to Snow White and during his brief description of her, he says, "Although she lives with seven other men, she's not easy". For kids who don't get the whole dating thing, they might have missed that one pretty easily.
Shrek: Bed Scene
In "Shrek", there's also a scene where Farquad is naked under the covers of his bed with a martini in hand and he's asking the magic mirror to repeatedly show him an image of Fiona. The mirror keeps giving him a knowing side-eye look, and Farquad is smiling and nearly rips the sheets off of himself.
"Shrek" has many literally dirty jokes, but none so intimate as this one. Kids might understand that he's attracted to Fiona, but that doesn't mean they understand what he was about to do. Unfortunately, the rest of us do.
Shrek: Shrek Calls Farquaad Out
When Shrek and Donkey make their way to Farquaad's castle in Duloc, they marvel at the size of the castle. Before they go in to marvel at the number of absurdities lining the grounds, Shrek makes a clever joke.
Because the castle is huge, Shrek feels the urge to ask, "Do you think he's compensating for something?" Well, after the last dirty bit we got from Farquaad, we'd have to say that, yes, he's definitely compensating for more than just a single something.
Dexter's Laboratory: Muffin
While we're still on the subject of cartoons, there is an episode of Dexter's Laboratory that we will never forget. It has a lot to do with muffins. Dexter and his sister have to keep their dad away from their mom's muffins while she's out shopping.
During the episode, he can't stop going on about how much he loves her muffins. He even says at a certain point that he married her for her muffin. At that point, we don't think he was talking about her recipe.
School Of Rock: Flipping The Bird
Not all adult jokes have to be dirty. This one was certainly funny without having to say anything explicitly rude or sexual and it still works because kids might not understand the meaning, but their guardian certainly does.
When Jack Black's character is speaking to a former bandmate, he holds up three fingers to him (his index, middle, and ring) and says "read between the lines". This is a pretty clever way for someone to flip another person off.
School Of Rock: "I've Touched Them"
Although we just gave you a clever moment from "School of Rock" that didn't involve anything dirty, we're about to spoil that for you by providing perhaps one of the better moments from the movie. When he's found out as a fraud, Jack Black delivers an inspiring speech before ruining it by saying, "My name is Dewey Finn, and no, I'm not a licensed teacher, but I have been touched by your kids. And I'm pretty sure I've touched them.
It goes without saying that in any other context this would be horrifying, but Jack Black just pulls it off so well and the pride on his face makes this mistake so much better. Everyone, including the parents and kids who were just smiling along to his quotable speech, all dropped their smiles before starting an uproar.
The Powerpuff Girls: Accidents Happen
In an episode of "The Powerpuff Girls", the girls meet a friend their age named Robin. They bring her over to their house to introduce her to their dad, the professor. That's when they make an uncomfortable comment.
After explaining that the professor made them by accident, he admits it shyly. Then Robin says to him, "Don't worry, Professor. I was an accident, too!" Then they run away leaving him in shock. That's not something a child should know about themselves.
Ratatouille: Small Package Comment
"Ratatouille" isn't shy towards some dirty jokes. One of the best ones is when Alfredo is trying to explain to Colette that his abilities in the kitchen are all due to the rat pulling his hair strings.
He fumbles with his words, saying "I have a small…uh…" while at the same time gesturing with his finger and thumb that there is something small. Colette looks down towards his crotch and then back up at him pretty confused as to what he's trying to imply.
Ratatouille: More Than Just Veggies
Like we said, "Ratatouille" isn't shy when it comes to dirty jokes. There is a moment where the head chef mentions to Alfredo that the vegetables are able to be used for more than just consumption.
He says, "One can get TOO familiar with vegetables, ya know!" We're not sure if he was speaking from experience or if he was just alluding to their potential use for other dirty things. Either way, we can't help but laugh that this exists in the film.
Ratatouille: "I Don't Swallow"
If you wanted more "Ratatouille", this one was just too good to leave out. With no shortage of dirty jokes and double entendres, we thought this entry from "Ratatouille" was probably the best one yet.
When Alfredo asks Anton Ego, the food critic, what happens if he doesn't like the food, he responds, "If I don't love it, I don't swallow." With that attitude, we're wondering what else he doesn't swallow.
Big: Sleepover Scene
In the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks, a boy makes a wish at one of those vintage fortune-telling machines that ends up turning him into an adult with the mind of a child. This sets up for quite a few jokes including this dirty one:
When asked by an older woman to spend the night, Hanks' character notices the bunk bed and says "Ok, but I'm on top". This not only has a different meaning but is further expanded on when he does end up taking the top bunk and the woman is sad he isn't sleeping with her. Kids think it's funny because the top bunk is the best.
The Road To El Dorado: Chel And Tulio
There's a scene in "The Road to El Dorado" where Chel And Tulio are being called upon and they frantically get up from the bed they are laying in together. But while they're supposed to be kissing, they are actually doing something a little more dirty.
Chel is nowhere near Tulio's face when they get up and is presumably doing something a bit more sexual in nature. Since they seem to be fully dressed, kids definitely wouldn't notice this detail.
Mrs. Doubtfire: A Little Too Graphic
"The Road to El Dorado" isn't the only movie on this list to make a reference to fellatio. We all know Mrs. Doubtfire isn't afraid to get a bit graphic, but this time it's a whole other story. While dining with Stu, she mentions the many names of intercourse.
When it gets to be too much for him, she says, "Oh I'm sorry, am I being a little graphic? I'm sorry. Well, I hope you're up for a little competition. She's got a power tool in the bedroom, dear. It's her own personal jackhammer. She could break the sidewalk with that thing. She uses it and the lights dim, it's like a prison movie. Amazed she hasn't chipped her teeth."
Coco: Héctor's Song
There is no shortage of songs in this movie. That's one of the things that makes Coco so great, especially since it brings Latin American culture to the forefront. There is a lyric in the song that some kids may not notice.
When Héctor is singing about Juanita, he mentions that "her knuckles, they drag on the floor". Chicharrón is quick to point out that those are not the words, but he gets brushed off. If you were older when watching this movie, you'd know he was talking about her bosom.
Coco: Choking On Chorizo
If that was good, wait 'till you hear this. When someone explains how Hector died, they all laugh because the explanation given is that he died "choking on chorizo". For many of us, we'd think they laughed because that's a pitiful way to die.
As it turns out, that is actually Mexican slang for performing fellatio. While he probably did die choking on a chorizo, this explanation makes the joke all that much funnier.
The Rugrats Movie: New Baby
This one isn't so much of a dirty joke, per se, but rather a funny quip that had to be censored in order to keep the G rating. In "The Rugrats Movie" we get a view of what the world is like before and just after Tommy's brother Dil is born.
While Tommy's parents are discussing the sex of the newborn, Tommy's cousin, Angelica, chimes in with "You know what they say: born under Venus, look for a--" then being interupted before she can finish the rhyme.
The Rugrats Movie: Dil Is Born
That's not the only time a joke is made in "The Rugrats Movie" with a reference to male genitalia. Specifically, when Dil is born, another baby in the hospital makes a comment referring to umbilical cords, but with an obvious reference to something else.
One of the girl babies cries out during a song: "They cut my cord!" In response, one of the male babies says, "Consider yourself lucky!" while looking into his pants, indicating they cut something down there.
Zootopia: Rabbit Breeding Habits
"Zootopia" is a movie filled with many questions looking for answers. What would a world of animals look like? What would the dichotomy of predator and prey be like in this world? Who would fit what role?
Apparently, it would be basically the same as our world, which means dirty jokes abound. When the bunny cop, Judy, arrests Nick for tax evasion, she attempts to tell him how much he owes and comments that "[she is] just a dumb bunny, but we are good at multiplying". Double entendre, anyone?
Zootopia: Crystal Meth Reference
Anyone who's young enough to have watched "Zootopia" as a kid had probably never seen "Breaking Bad" before, as the references to drugs and the violence may be too mature for them.
Well, that didn't stop the movie from having a reference to the show. There's a bunch of sheep in yellow jumpsuits and gas masks synthesizing something out of the blue flower. This is clearly a reference to the synthesizing of blue crystal meth from the show.
Ghostbusters: Theme Song
You may not have ever thought to listen too closely to the lyrics of the song, but if you listen closely enough, you'll notice a line that might just make you rethink whether or not you should play this for your kids.
The song goes: "Lemme tell ya something; Bustin' makes me feel good!" This line is preceded by even more evidence to the dirtiness of the song: "Mmm, if you've had a dose of a; Freaky ghost, baby; You better call; Ghostbusters!; Ow!"
Toy Story 2: Buzz Gets Turned On
There's a moment shared between Buzz Lightyear and Jessie when they need to find some way to escape from the room they're trapped in. Jessie comes up with a bright idea to launch herself onto the door handle using a race track toy.
That's when it happens. From sheer amazement, Buzz releases his airplane wings with a face of utter awe. At least, that's how it seemed to us as kids. Now we know that this was the equivalent of him getting an erection.
Toy Story: Bo Peep And Woody
There isn't just one dirty joke made in this film series. After all, they have to keep the adults entertained somehow. There's a moment in the original "Toy Story" where Bo Peep seductively flirts with Woody after he helps her out.
Bo Peep says to Woody, "I wanted to thank you, Woody, for saving my flock". After telling her it was nothing, she replies by asking, "What do you say I get someone else to watch the sheep tonight?" to which Woody just laughs bashfully and says "oh, yeah".
Toy Story: Subtle Connotation
We found one more thing that we think might interest you to know about this movie. There's a certain toy in the world of "Toy Story" that you might not understand at first why it exists, but thinking about it might be kind of obvious.
When you take a look at the pair of legs with a hook, you might just think "huh, that's a weird toy". But it actually does have a meaning to it. It's a naked pair of legs attached to a fishing hook. Others might call this one a "hooker".
Finding Nemo: Lucky Tentacle
In "Finding Nemo" one of Nemo's classmates, Pearl, states that she has a lucky tentacle. Being a flapjack octopus, this might be a reference to something not everyone realizes is a bit sexual in nature.
Most octopuses have a special "tentacle" called a hectocotylus. This is actually a modified arm used by the octopus to fertilize eggs. In other words, this "lucky tentacle" is actually their version of genitals.
The Boss Baby: Iced Tea
In "The Boss Baby" Tim and Ted end up in a party limousine and Tim receives a drink that is presumably non-alcoholic...or is it? It was a party after all, but we're not sure what the drink really was.
Anyway, he takes a sip and says "The people of Long Island do not know how to make an iced tea" and throws it in the trash. Why a child was drinking alcohol or, at the very least, knows what a good Long Island iced tea tastes like is beyond us.
Frozen: "Size Doesn't Matter"
We know, just the title of this item probably already has you in an uproar. How can a movie as pure and beautiful as "Frozen" have anything lude or adult in it? Simple. It's as easy as pretty much every other entry here.
When Anna and Kristoff are taking a sleigh ride, they start talking about foot size. You know what they say about men with big feet. Well, in response to the conversation, Anna says "Size doesn't matter". We know what you mean, girl.
The LEGO Batman Movie: Cussing
It's no surprise that eventually kids will learn bad words. That's just the nature of things. They spend a long time not understanding it and then a friend comes along and tell them the bad words their parents said not to use.
In "The LEGO Batman Movie" Robin says to Batman "My name is Richard but my friends call me Dick: to which he responds "Kids can be so cruel". He just said what we've all been thinking. Sorry, Richards of the world.
Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
This isn't exactly a kid's movie, but we all know that kids watch it. This is a hilarious joke that they probably wouldn't understand the first few time around. When Carina Smith mentions she's a horologist (studier of clocks or maker of clocks) the pirates go wild.
Jack Sparrow sputters out a "No shame in that--we all have to make a living, eh?" When she repeats what she is, another pirate says, "well so was my mum but she didn't cry about it as loud as you". I think we all know what they thought a "hor"-ologist was.
Cars: Flashing Lights
In "Cars" there is a moment where Lightning McQueen wins a race and is approached by a massive crowd of fans and paparazzi. A couple of twin cars who claim to be his biggest fans and are painted over just like him flash their lights at him.
This is a pretty clever way to imply that they've just flashed him, as they have quite literally done so. It's also done in a way that hides it from the children present so it still retains the G rating.
Cats And Dogs: The "B" Word
If you weren't already aware, the derogatory word that starts with a "B" and ends with a "CH" was originally used to refer to a female dog. That meaning has since fallen out of use and is strictly a curse word now.
Cleverly, the movie "Cats and Dogs" found a way to bring that meaning out in a way that keeps it in a PG rating. One of the dog yells "Son of my mom" because that's obviously what the word literally means. What an interesting loophole.
Robots: Making A Baby
A scene in the movie "Robots" sees the protagonist, Rodney Copperbottom, and his wife, Lydia, trying to make a baby. In a world of robots, this isn't the typical process. When he's late to the "delivery", Lydia says to him, "Oh, honey, you missed the delivery...but it's okay! Making the baby is the fun part."
Some kids might just take this literally as they've likely played with building blocks before. As for us, we know exactly what she means and would have to agree on all points made.
Inside Out: Bear
In "Inside Out" there's a scene where Riley gets scared while in bed. As a reaction to the emotion, Fear asks, "What was that? Was it a bear? It's a bear!" to which Disgust responds "There are no bears in San Francisco". Then Anger mentions, "I saw a really hairy guy. He looked like a bear".
If you're caught up on your LGBTQ+ terminology, you'd know exactly what they were doing here. We thought this was a clever way to bring in even a hint of representation of the community into Pixar.
The Toy: Master Bates
We're pretty sure the only reason they named this dude Eris Bates was to make this joke. As a pompous millionaire's son, he is referred to as "master". We all know where this one is going.
Yes, in this movie he was introduced as "Master Bates" and it was the best moment ever. If you think that's an old joke, well let us remind you that this movie is from 1982, so yeah, it is an old joke.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000): Baby Delivery
In this rendition of the classic Dr. Seuss book, Cindy Lou Who is interviewing a couple of elderly women to understand how the Grinch came into being. They mentioned that he came about the way all babies do: falling from the sky in their very own "pumbersellas".
It then proceeds to show the baby being delivered to the door. A man appears and exclaims "Our baby is here!" then upon closer inspection says, "it kind of looks like your boss..." Although the babies aren't delivered in the traditional way, we all know what that's supposed to mean.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000): Key Party
That's not even close to the worst thing put into the kid's book adaptation. For a movie that's supposed to be about Christmas and features an untraditional way to receive a baby, we didn't expect this little detail:
There's a scene where all the Whos are having a party and the men put all of their keys into a communal bowl. For those who don't know, this is a game at the end of a party where the women randomly select a set of keys from the bowl to determine who they are going home with that night.
Scooby-Doo (2002): Mary Jane
If you know "Scooby-Doo" then you know that shaggy is a major pothead. "Like, major". Debatably the other members of the Mystery Gang are as well, but if anyone is then it's Shaggy.
It's no surprise, then that when Shaggy meets the girl of his dream (she also eats Scooby-Snacks and speaks like him) that he would tell her that her name, Mary Jane, is "Like [his] favorite name!" For the uninitiated, Mary Jane is another way to say marijuana. Now it all makes sense.
Mr. Peabody And Sherman: Clinton
During the climax of the film, the police are ready to arrest Mr. Peabody for all the chaos and destruction caused by the use of the WABAC machine. That is until President George Washington gives him a presidential pardon with Abraham Lincoln and Bill Clinton to back him up.
When Bill Clinton comes into the frame, he happens to exclaim, "I've done worse!" This is an obvious reference to his affair while in office, something that has gone down in history as his most infamous action.
Rango: Thespians
In "Rango", an anthropomorphic lizard finds himself in modern (2011) day the Mojave Desert and becomes the sheriff of the town of Dirt. When a band of thieves comes to town, they read up on the local attractions.
While reading a book, Ezekiel says "I think they're thespians" referring to the actors around. In response, Balthazar says "Thespians? That's illegal in seven states!" Obviously, they weren't aware that only four years later it would become legal on the federal level.
Rango: Plan B
When Rango and Beans are attempting to save the town's water supply, they share a kiss. Suddenly, Beans swallows and freaks out asking what it was. Rango says, "No need to panic, but I think you just swallowed plan B".
Not only was this an obvious reference to the pill taken as a contraceptive, but they do this immediately after kissing, furthering the joke. Afterward, she nearly drowns. In a movie that touched on the legality of homosexuality, this scene talking about abortion was just all kinds of inappropriate.
Aladdin: Brothel
"Aladdin" is filled with clever jokes and witty lines, especially considering the outstanding performance of Genie by the late Robin Williams. But what you probably didn't notice was the implicit sexual themes within the movie.
As it turns out, there's a brothel in the movie. And that's not all. Aladdin is known by each and every one of the ladies who work there. We knew Aladdin was a player, but we didn't realize that he was doing that all this time.
Hey Arnold: Helga's Obsession
There's a bunch of different things people say to help make people feel better when they get bullied, such as when someone is bullying you it might mean they like you but don't know how to express it. In Helga's case, this is truly spot-on.
If you've ever watched an episode of "Hey Arnold!" you'd know just how deep this crazy obsession Helga has for the "football head". In one episode, she even mentions that he "makes [her] girlhood tremble". It's worth mentioning that this girl is 9 or 10. Yikes.
Matilda: Short And Curlies
We've covered "Matilda" before and we know that this movie is no stranger to some pretty adult themes like parental neglect and abuse. It's no surprise that they threw in a couple of adult subject matter on top of that.
When Matilda is desperately trying to vie for her mother's attention while she's on a phone call, you can hear her mother say into the phone "It would change your life, too, if you waxed yours. I'm positive."
Toy Story: Kiss-Up
It turns out that "Toy Story is just full of adult jokes. We saved a few for last so that you wouldn't get so jaded reading the others. This one is also milder than some of the others which is a refreshing twist on the dirty jokes we've had up until now.
While speaking to the typing toy, Mr. Potato Head says what he thinks about Slinky. He pulls out his lips and sticks it on his bum while pointing at him. He's trying to call him a kiss-a**.
Toy Story 3: Lips
Finally, we've reached a Toy Story 3 joke. Up until now, we haven't seen one of those (still waiting to find one from 4). This one also happens to be from the delightfully sassy Mr. Potato Head. When a certain character nabs Mrs. Potato Head's mouth, Mr. Potato Head reacts negatively and yells, "Hey! No one takes my wife's mouth. Except me."
We've seen a lot of fellatio jokes at this point to have taught the world what that word even means, but to hear it from a potato? Never mind that he's a toy. Is that even possible? Wait, the nature of what kind of toy he is might mean yes...
SpongeBob SquarePants: Sea Anemone
There was that one time in a "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode where SpongeBob turns on the TV to a certain channel and quickly shuts it off as his pet snail, Gary is sitting there giving him a look.
He was watching a channel on sea anemones and it seems that in his universe this is a form of pornography. We don't want to know what other kinky things they are into in Bikini Bottom (which by the way is another dirty joke).
SpongeBob SquarePants: Panty Hunting
Speaking of bikini bottoms, there was another episode where Mr. Krabs sent SpongeBob and Patrick out to hunt for some panties. They finally get them and it turns out to be Mr. Krabs' own mother.
Not only did we find it weird that this was an episode for kids, but how did it make it onto the air? It was apparently removed from the air not long ago and we honestly aren't surprised by that.
Victorious; From an "A" to a "D"
There's an episode of "Victorious" where the kids and the teacher are discussing grades. Andre asks, "You've always had "A"s in music. How do you go from an 'A' to a 'D'?" to which Jade responds "It happened to me in eighth grade."
We're no experts here, but we're pretty sure that she wasn't talking about grades when she mentioned her eighth grade "D". This wasn't the most common thing to say back then so kids probably didn't understand. "Victorious" was way ahead of its time.
Trolls: Sarcasm
In the movie "Trolls", there was a moment where Poppy and Branch were arguing and she asks if he knows anything about romance. He says that he's passionate about it and she's surprised to hear so.
She asks if he's serious and he says "Don't you know anything about sarcasm?" Suddenly Cooper pops into the frame and says "I think I had a sarcasm once!" Given the context before this interaction, we definitely know what he meant by that.
Madagascar: Iced Tea
If you thought that we only had one iced tea-related post on this list, you were wrong. There are many clever ways that movies like to bleep out bad words, but this one has to be one of the best.
When Alex finds Marty, they start running towards each other in slow motion with beautiful music playing. Suddenly, Marty realizes that Alex is furious and he runs away, still in slow motion, shouting, "Oh, sugar honey iced tea," spelling out exactly how he felt in that moment.
Toy Story 4: Forky's Sad State
We finally found it, though this one is a bit more nuanced and morbid. Throughout the movie, a handcrafted toy named forky continuously tries to throw himself away, which is a bit similar to suicide idealization.
The trash to him is his warmth and safety because he considers himself to be garbage. It's a really sad state of affairs since we actually love forky to death. This is something that kids might not fully understand the meaning of, but we're happy that he gets a happy ending.
