VIPs have to do something pretty bad to get kicked off set, right?. What exactly? Well, crew and cast affairs, nasty attitudes, and a few punches are certainly reasons enough for actors to get the boot, and while some of the bad behaviors do seem similar, they all have their details and even bigger repercussions. Want to see who deserved it? Read more to find out.
1. Kevin Spacey
You might recognize him as Frank Underwood from the hit TV show House of Cards, where he was the lead actor for five out of six successful seasons. The final season focused on the aftermath of his fictional death.
Once Buzzfeed published the first allegation from a male, who was underage at the time of the occurrence, more stories of unwanted sexual contact poured in against Kevin Spacey, totaling in 11 separate accusers. While the actor was "horrified" by the accounts, he took the moment to come out as gay and was also removed from the show.
2. Anne Hathaway
Yes, we all know and love this actress, but even sweetheart starlets can be shown the door. Anne Hathaway was actually removed from set before shooting over a disagreement with director Judd Apatow about a particular scene.
What did Apatow and Hathaway quarrel over? A birthing scene that would feature explicit body parts (we'll leave you to your imagination). While they were going to insert a clip of someone else's parts, Anne didn't believe that it was integral to the story. Who came in to replace her? No other than Katherine Heigel, who crushed that scene.
3. Charlie Sheen
Did someone say "Hashtag, Winning?" It hasn't been Charlie Sheen for a while, ever since he was forced to leave the show Two and a Half Men. He was featured in 9 out of 12 seasons.
Sheen went in and out of a drug rehab program, had a tumultuous relationship with the producers as he threatened to quit over a low salary of one million dollars but still came back to film, and ultimately engaged in too much self-destructive behavior that got the producers to write an eleven-page letter describing his poor actions.
4. Megan Fox
She was all the rage back in the early 2010's, but was familiar with rage in a different way on set of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Her feuds with the director were enough to get her fired, including a comparison that is quite difficult to digest.
Critically acclaimed director Micheal Bay apparently made set life tough for Megan Fox. She made a reference to Hitler when describing his directorship, and called him a "nightmare to work with." Sounds like a good move on both their parts.
5. Selma Blair
Selma Blair fought her wrongful termination with a $1.2 million lawsuit. What made it so wrongful? One of our article's familiar faces: Charlie Sheen, who played Blair's on-screen boyfriend of the series Anger Management.
Blair made a complaint against Sheen holding up filming and got fired as a result. Her lawsuit reflects the money she would've been paid had she continued acting on the show. Anger Management sounds like the right show for this one to go down...
6. Edward Norton
The Avengers' Edward Norton was not asked back to his role as the Hulk after the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk was received by the public. The Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated actor seemed to have personal problems on set.
Apparently, Norton was hard to get along with in relation to his fellow actors. While Norton claims "creative differences", Marvel Studios' President of Production stated a need for an actor with the "creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members." Actors need to play nice.
7. Ryan Gosling
The Hollywood Heartthrob isn't immune to his bad days in the industry. Ryan was slated to star as the dad in the movie adaptation of These Lovely Bones, but was dismissed from the set because of his immense weight gain which he attributed to his imagination of the character.
Gosling imagined the dad as a heavy-set man, and gained a whopping 60 pounds in preparation for the role. "I really believed he should be 210 pounds" is unfortunately a lot of dedication for an empty opportunity. Gosling is still looking good though!
8. Taylor Momsen
Taylor Momsen played Jenny Humphrey in the classic, culturally ever-present series Gossip Girl. While her character had the story arch of a nice girl turned spoiled, uncontrollable, brooding, punky wild child, her real-life experience followed suit.
Momsen made it through four seasons of the series before producers decided to let her go over simply terrible behavior -- Momsen was unable to memorize lines, even as her lines dwindled through the series. Guest star on the show Tim Gunn compared his experience with her on set as "being held hostage" by her lack of dedication. In the words of Gossip Girl, XOXO Momsen.
9. James Remar
The would've been Aliens actor was fired from set only after one week of filming. He had originally claimed he left set because of "urgent matters at home" but now tells a different story.
Remar had been arrested for possession of illegal drugs. While his addiction cost him this job, he made up for it by sobering up and getting his roles in tons of movies like Pineapple Express, Django Unchained, and additional voiceover roles.
10. Sylvester Stalone
Most directors and writers don't like it when other people try to do their jobs, especially not actors. Sylvester Stalone ignored this when he was on set for Beverly Hills Cop and Eddie Murphy joined in his stead.
Stallone tried to re-write the character, Axel Foley, against the wishes of his CAA agent Ron Meyer, who begged him not to change the script. Stallone didn't want the role as is, and walked away from the opportunity. He had one job! Meanwhile, Stallone makes a reappearance on this list, but not in the way you'd think!
11. Judy Garland
We're off to see The Wizard! Well...not so fast. Cult classic starlet Judy Garland may have had the ruby slippers, but she also had a bad attitude that got her fired from the set of Valley of the Dolls.
Irritable and suffering from overconsumption of drugs and alcohol, Garland was fired by the director Mark Robson. Judy was supposed to play Helen Lawson, who was recast as Susan Hayward.
12. Columbus Short
The Scandal lead character certainly served the name of the series. The actor on the Shonda Rhimes show was written out of the series after an accusation of domestic abuse from his wife.
Later on, Short admitted that he was also using drugs to self-medicate him during his time on the show, claiming he "had a lot on his plate." He was also arrested for knocking a man out during a fight at an L.A. restaurant. Short says he's overcoming his substance abuse and is doing better.
13. Patrick Dempsey
Grey's Anatomy is a medical soap opera that had no shortage of it's own drama on set. The dreamy Dempsey had an affair with a crew member...and what makes it worse is that it was an intern.
Patrick denied these allegations but ultimately left the show after 11 seasons of playing Derek, who got killed off in a car crash. However, the show's creator says that Patrick's leaving the show was ultimately a mutual decision.
14. Mischa Barton
While some of these celebs on the list were fired for their feisty behaviors, Mischa was barred for quite the opposite reason: being too boring! The Hills: New Beginnings actress is a one-season wonder.
TMZ says that the series producers "found Mischa's story line a bit bland," and her lack of connection to her fellow castmates didn't help her case. Don't remember her? Don't be surprised.
15. Thomas Gibson
11 seasons + an altercation with a producer = enough grounds for a swift goodbye to Gibson. The Criminal Minds actor was suspended for two weeks before being fired after a nasty incident.
Gibson got into a physical fight with writer-producer Virgil Williams during a season 12 shoot. Gibson downplayed the situation to the press, over explaining the incident, but lacked an apology.
16. Jay Thomas
The namesake of many bars around the world, the show Cheers waved goodbye to Jay Thomas who played fictional Carla Tortelli's husband Eddie. His rude gossip about his castmates got him into some hot water.
When asked by a radio caller about his experience on Cheers, he described it as "terrible" because he has to kiss the actress who played Carla -- Rhea Perlman. Gotta play nice if you want to raise a glass, Jay!
17. Michael Pitt
Michael Pitt had a whole host of problems during the taping of the hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire. His tardiness and inability to learn lines hindered the show, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Pitt got into a fistfight with famous gangster-playing actor William Forsythe, which led to his termination from the show. He was written out of the show via death by bullets.
18. T.J. Miller
Silicon Valley has a special place in the hearts of it's techie fans who finally have a show about their lives in and out of work. Speaking of out of work, T.J. Miller was forced to split ways with the show.
According to people from the set, Miller would show up late and even fall asleep during filming. His abuse of drugs and alcohol made him tough to work with, even causing entire shoot days to be canceled.
19. Jeremy Clarkson
BBC's Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson lost his job because of an "unprovoked physical and verbal attack" on a crew member. This rant went on for thirty seconds over a very small issue.
For Clarkson, not having hot food is some way to justify berating production staff. His abusive language was also used generally throughout production and made working with him hard...hard enough for him to say bye-bye to the BBC.
20. Roseanne Barr
Not only was Roseanne Barr booted from her show, but the entire series also rebranded itself! Barr tweeted a racist tweet against former President Obama's adviser. While she apologized, it was not enough for the network, or the rest of humanity, to forgive her.
The series changed from "Roseanne" to "The Conners" and made sure that Barr wouldn't continue to receive any financial gains from the show. Celebrities need to remember that what happens on the internet, stays on the internet!
21. Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. was once Hollywood's highest paid actor, but his success suffered greatly during his substance addictions. In between two rehabilitation programs, Downey Jr. was an actor on TV show Ally McBeal.
During 2000 and 2001, he faced two drug charges and was written out of the series, thus entering a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. He has been sober since 2003.
22. Clayne Crawford
Fox's Lethal Weapon reboot star Clayne Crawford was fired on the accounts of bad behavior and issues with fellow castmate Daymon Wayans. But Crawford claims he was set up to fail.
Crawford had two main outbursts that ultimately led to his firing -- one against what he deemed unsafe working conditions, and the other against Wayans who refused to shoot in a church (as he is a Jehovah's Witness). Sean Williams Scott replaced Crawford's on the show.
23. Danny Masterson
Danny was fired from the Netflix series The Ranch in 2017 after facing sexual assault allegations from four women spanning from the early 2000s. Masterson tried to get off the hook by saying the allegations come from a long time ago and railed against the #MeToo movement.
"In the current climate, it seems as if you are presumed guilty the moment you are accused," Masterson retaliated. Netflix aired the remaining episodes of the show (that were shot prior to the allegations), and gave him an open-ended goodbye in the series, somehow giving his character an opportunity to return in the future.
24. Hartley Sawyer
Bad Tweets claim yet another victim. Hartley Sawyer was fired after previously deleted racist, misogynistic tweets resurfaced in the form of screenshots. The tweets were posted prior to his acting on the CW's The Flash.
He was fired for season seven of the series, and published an apology on Instagram that while his words had an "intent of humor", they were "hurtful and unacceptable." Gotta think before you tweet!
25. Megyn Kelly
Poached from her post at Fox News to create and host her namesake show that she was fired from, Megyn Kelly's hosting journey certainly takes the cake.
Megyn's show was canceled after she defened the use of blackface on her show. Her show was canceled only after one season, and many are thankful and relieved for that decision.
26. Gina Carano
The Mandalorian actress is the latest in cancel culture. She is off of Lucasfilms' payroll ever since she posted offensive tweets. Gina made a comparison between today's politics and the Holocaust.
This hasn't been her first rodeo in being offensive online. She has previously shared false information about voter fraud during the election and has expressed disdain for mask-wearers during Covid.
27. Jenelle Evans
It's a tough break to get fired from a reality TV show. MTV Teen Mom 2 star was promptly dropped from the show after severe anger issues were made public with her husband.
First, Janelle's husband, David Eason, shot and killed their dog for nipping at their daughter. Then, three of their children were removed from their home by Child Protective Services. Fame by the Teen Mom series is never the easiest way to fame.
28. Louis CK
Louis CK was fired from The Secret Life of Pets 2 after he was flooded with accusations of sexual misconduct. The voice actor of the original animated children's movie was booted from the sequel and faced the cancellation of his animated TBS TV show The Cops.
TBS made a large effort to distance themselves from the fall of the famous comedian. Within the 36 hours of five women coming out with allegations again CK, networks from HBO to Netflix suspended upcoming content that feature him. The Secret Life of Louis CK is no longer so.
29. Lori Loughlin
Lori's been in the news for quite a few years now. The Full House (and Fuller House) actress was involved in a college admissions cheating scandal to get her daughter into university. She was written out of When Calls the Heart.
Lori and her husband spent nearly half a million dollars by pretending they were crew team recruits, in order to get their daughter accepted into the University of Southern California. News first broke in May 2019 and they pleaded guilty the following year. And we thought college was already expensive!
30. Jussie Smolett
The Empire actor allegedly staged a hate crime against himself, which included a hospitalization in Chicago and a MAGA reference. Smollett was arrested in 2019 and early cancel culture and chaos ensued.
Fox and Smolett agreed to an extension of his character throughout the sixth season with no plan to renew the character, but the sixth season turned out to be the last.
31. Bam Margera
You gotta do something bad to get fired from a movie with the word Jackass in it. Bam was fired from Jackass 4 a few days after announcing he was seeking treatment for drug issues.
Bam essentially broke his contract by not properly managing his addictions, which included routine drug tests, seeing a psychologist, and taking medication. Additionally, his Jackass cast and crew were rightfully worried about his self-sabotaging habits.
32. Shia LaBeouf
Olivia Wilde's "no assholes policy" was put into effect when she fired Shia LaBeouf from the set of her new movie Don't Worry Darling for poor behavior, which we can understand after hearing the recent news about the childhood legacy actor.
LaBeouf's ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs recently made the abusive nature of their violent and toxic relationship public and is now suing him for the psychological and phsyical duress she endured. Wilde replaced LaBeouf with her bf, Harry Styles.
33. Johnny Depp
The actor who is somehow able to change his face for every role he's been in, now must save face after being fired from the Harry Potter spinoff "Fantastic Beasts".
Depp was asked to resign following his accusations from his now ex-wife Amber Heard of being a "wife beater." Depp openly sued Heard for libel. Not only did he lose the lawsuit, but Heard opened a counter-suit on defamation.
34. Sarah Silverman
The comedien was fired from a movie (to this date we don't know which) because of a terrible photo of her that resurfaced on the internet featuring the set of The Sarah Silverman Show.
The actress was photographed in 2007 wearing blackface for a comedy sketch. Silverman didn't fight the firing, "all I can say is that I'm not that type of person anymore." We hope so, Sarah. We hope so.
35. Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon certainly seemed to be the host of every reality show, but will no longer be holding a mic in front of an audience for his anti-Semitic comments. Cannon was fired from ViacomCBS comedy show Wild 'N Out after publishing his controversial podcast episode.
Nick's podcast series Cannon's Class was a platform for him to speak his mind and "the truth" which included his thoughts on anti-Semitic theories and hateful words against Jews. It was wild and forced him...out.
36. Andrew Garfield
When you fall as a superhero, it hurts twice as hard. Andrew Garfield was fired from his reprisal role as Spiderman in The Amazing Spiderman 3. Apparently, his lack of enthusiasm existed both as a verbal blame game and physical no-showing.
The actor was busy trying to pin the lukewarm reception of The Amazing Spiderman 2 on others, but also bailed on a gala event moments before because his beard was scruffy and didn't want to be bothered. He was replaced by Tom Holland.
37. Hannah Ferrier
Below Deck Mediterranean star Hannah Ferrier was left ashore. The Chief Stewardess was fired after being outed for having unregistered drugs and a vape pen aboard the massive yacht.
Ferrier said she had nothing to hide, and that Valium is something that she always has for her anxiety, and that then vape pen actually contained CBD, treating the same issues. The 33-year-old had an unfortunate early departure.
38. Nicolle Wallace
The View on Nicolle Wallace doesn't seem so enviable. Yes, The View co-host was fired just after one season because she was not firing up her fellow co-hosts enough to make the show interesting.
Wallace calls it a casting mistake, and felt bad about the firing because she was sharing very personal thoughts and opinions on the show. She compared it to being broken up with. But she still continues her career in political journalism, so keep up the good work!
39. Richard Gere
Butting heads with Sylvester Stallone in real life is never a good thing. Richard Gere was fired from The Lords of Flatbush after a long-time grudge against his co-star.
During a fight scene, Gere got too carried away and was "impossible to deal with," according to Stallone. Gere was given an ultimatum, and was fired from the 1974 film.
40. Jenny Slate
Jenny Slate was dropped from NBC's Saturday Night Live after dropping an f-bomb during one of the live shows. Even during late night, it was too much for the iconic series.
Slate continues to make tons of appearances in films and TV shows, all things that are pre-recorded and edited so she never has to make headlines in that way ever again.
